Postal Regulatory Commission Rules on Exigent Rate Case
On July 29th the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) issued a ruling on the Exigent Rate Case. The ruling states the exigent surcharge will remain in effect until the USPS recovers an additional $1.191 billion.
As a result of this ruling, the current postage rates, which include the exigent surcharge, will remain in effect until the additional $1.191 billion is collected, which is estimated to be about eight months from now. Based on the last rate case taking effect on May 31st, the expiration of the surcharge could potentially coincide with a future USPS rate case. This would potentially allow mailers and software providers to update the rates for both the rate case and the expiration of the exigent surcharge at one time.
